Going back to school this year is going to be hard for some. And weird. Maybe even scary. Especially if you already struggle with being “different”, alone, sick, impoverished, or a whole slew of other things. But a small thing we can all do in our classrooms is make the big statement that EVERY KIND OF CHILD is important, is beautiful, and is an asset to the community. They each, in their own way, make the world a better place.
And that is what I hope this poster helps us remember in every classroom or home that it hangs in.
It’s kind of funny that I’ve become attached to these faceless little characters, imagining their backgrounds and struggles as I drew each one, sort of creating my own stories about them. But more than that, I kept imagining people I went to school with and wondering if they would recognize features of themselves in the characters I’ve drawn, if they’d realize that I thought of them as I drew the girl with only one arm, or the boy with no hair, and all the girl who always came home from vacation with cornrows and braids. But my favorite part of it is that everyone will see every child differently, and that’s okay! I hope kids sit in front of this poster and find something that makes them say, “Hey! That person has ____ just like me!”

Because diversity is beautiful, I hope to have a whole plethora of tools available in this shop to discuss diversity one day! But for now, this poster actually goes hand in hand with the I Spy Racial Awareness activity, which you can also find in the Diversity part of my shop!
I Spy Racial Awareness

Plus it’s all very hands-on fun!
