How To Participate in A Bookishly Diverse Holiday

For the past few weeks my heart has been mourning for a child in Florida who was discovered to have zero books in his home, and his school refused to step in and help. Children all over the world are in his shoes, it’s really not a unique story. But I was surprised at his school’s uncaring response. And with school’s being closed for so long, it seems especially urgent that we get kids books they can connect with and be inspired by! Again, I’ve been thinking about it for weeks now. Finally, a voice in my head said, “ok, you’ve been thinking about it long enough. Now, what are you going to do?!”

Well, here’s the plan, folks.

Quick Note:

Your donation will be verified by email within 48 hours of purchase. You will be able to respond to the verification email if there is a certain teacher you would like to send your donation to. Feel free to nominate your child’s teacher or a teacher in need anywhere within the continental USA in this way.

A Bookishly Diverse Holiday – Part 1

Donating 50% of All My Sales

I haven’t been satisfied with my income for a long time, so it seems backwards that I would want to give part of it away. But. I thought about it and decided to go for it. I tinkered with numbers but the only number that felt right was 50%! And friends, my heart is at peace. I’m so excited for this big step!

I am creating a pretty extensive list of books on Amazon (you can view farther down) that attempts to represent people from all kinds of different backgrounds and locales. I believe in the power of books to plant ideas and whole worlds in children, so this list is what I consider the most real, the most inspirational, the most truthful, and the most capacity for spreading goodness and kindness. They’re such good books that they’re really hard to get ahold of on discount websites. The average cost of a book is about $15 at normal retail price with shipping. So for every $30 you spend at Color Me Culturally Confident, at least 1 book will be able to be purchased. Here are some examples of how I will break it down:

1 Holiday Subscription = 1 Book Donated (at least)

Full Year of Multicultural Holidays Subscription

Purchase all of the holidays in advance and receive them via email before the beginning of each month. You will receive the current (and any previous, beginning with September) months holidays pack upon purchase. It breaks down to just $3/month, so you save $12.

36.00 $

3 Country ABC Books = 2 Books Donated (at least)

Color, read, count, play, explore, speak, build, create, and imagine your way around the world with this set of C is for China, R is for Russia, and P is for the Philippines lesson plan and activity books.

3 Country ABC *Downloads* = 3 Books Donated! (at least)

I am giving away 100% of the proceeds of the downloads as they are currently my least sold product!

Country ABC Lesson Plans and Downloads

These are the same lesson plans and activities you will find in my bound books, but you do the printing yourself for the discounted price!

35.00 $

More products will be featured through the next two months, so make sure to be following this site. While these products are being featured at the moment, remember that any and all purchases from Color Me Culturally Confident will go 50% towards the books and will be used to purchase as many books as possible. So if a children’s book is available at Book Outlet for $5 instead of on Amazon for $15, your purchase could donate 3 times as many books as planned!

The Book List

Want to review the titles that will be sent out to children in need? Or maybe you have a recommendation that could be added to that list? I’m all ears! Here is the growing list of children’s books that I am looking to send out in packages. The more books that can be purchased, the bigger each package can be. If you would like to purchase a book directly, that would be amazing! Or build your own wish list based off this one.

You’ll notice that the books are chosen based on few main factors, where diverse authorship is also important:

  1. Human Characters (as opposed to stories with talking animals, which I love, but not for this)
  2. True Stories
  3. Promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Social-Emotional Health

A Bookishly Diverse Holiday – Part 4

The Most Important Part

Finally, to the most important point – the recipients. The kids.

Another way to participate is to let me know of children, teachers, or schools in need of more diverse books. I already have reached out to 2 entities that are seeking help, and am waiting on their responses, but want to help as many as possible. Opportunities will be made available for anyone and everyone to submit names and a simple reason for why books should go to the nominee. Again, make sure you’re following along if you would like to make a nomination.

Imagined nominations might look like:

  • “Mr T teaches 1st grade in Tucson, AZ”
  • “The Flinstone family deserves a pick-me-up this 2020”
  • “ABC Elementary is trying to get a more diverse library selection funded”
